Place: Bushrangers Bay (Austràlia)
Description: Like a spinning galaxy on the ocean surface, this colony of hydroids is known as Porpita porpita. Hundreds of them wash up on beaches of the east coast of Australia during summer due north easterly winds. They are very delicate and will fall to pieces if touched, I was very lucky to find such a perfect specimen.

Description: A lonely Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) opens its wings before joining its mates which are resting on the trees nearby. This behavior allows them to share their body heat and overcome the low temperatures in winter.

Description: This really aggressive oriental whip snake (Ahaetulla cf. prasina prasina) was found in the tropical forest of Sulawesi. Using flash and long exposure I wanted to show the rapidity of the defensive behavior of this animal. After few shots, this individual leaved in the bush.

Description: Sahra sand vipers (Cerastes vipera) are adapted to life in a desert. During the day they stay under the sand but then come out at night time to go hunting, waiting for some prey to show up. I used a torch to take this photograph.

Description: The rain season brings the dance and mating of the fireflies (Lampyridae), one of the most spectacular shows in nature, to the oyamel (Abies religiosa) and conifer forests in Nanacamilpa, Mexico.

Bioluminescence de Marcio Cabral de Brasilia (Brasil)

Description: This photo shows inland fireflies (Lampyridae) bioluminescence and it was taken at the Emas National Parc, Brasil. This is the only place in the world where this phenomenon happens. At the beginning of the rain season the fireflies larvae feed on flying termites. Its light is used to attract other insects. Lightpainting was used to light up the termite tower.

Description: At night and in spring, there is a hotel in the middle of the forest where Spanish moon moths (Graellsia isabelae) seek the warmth of street lanterns to fight the cold of the night. This picture shows a male about to take off with the lights of a village in the background.
