Description: The moonlight mixed with the alpenglow, just before sunrise, illuminated the lenticular clouds, blown by the strong winds at a height, in a soft palette of pinks and blues. The composition was easy because I had worked on it days before, I only had to move around the small tree in the centre of the image, using the shape of the riverbank and the clouds to create strong vanishing points towards the corners of the frame on an imaginary “X”.

Description: Witnessing the eruption of a volcano is an overwhelming experience. Just a moment before seeing the ejection of pyroclastic materials from the crater one can feel the roaring of the explosion and the mountain shaking under one’s feet. Such a geological wonder makes one feel humble and respectful of Mother Nature.

Description: I planned this composition several months before travelling to the Stromboli. I knew the moon would pass over the volcano that night and at that time. What I didn’t know however is that thick clouds form almost every afternoon that prevented from seeing the summit. I took advantage when the sky opened up unexpectedly, letting the light of the bright full moon illuminate for a short moment the column of fire and stones that was erupting at its feet.
