A humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) with a line entangled in its tail, which has torn it apart and rendered it completely useless, agonises to death. A photograph and a moment very difficult to digest, but one that shows the reality of what we are doing not only to our oceans, but also to our planet, to ourselves.
A land hermit crab (Coenobita sp.) wandering around at night, close to the beach of Pom Pom island, Sabah (Borneo), where every day, tons of plastic waste from Semporna city is left on this island by sea currents. This particular land hermit crab is using a plastic plug from a deodorant instead of a classic shell, showing how marine life is affected in every aspect by the presence of plastic.
Heartbreaking yet captivating, wild asian elephants (Elephas maximus) scavenge a garbage dump, consuming hazardous waste in their search for food. Surrounded by colourful debris, they bear witness to the destructive impact of human waste, while egrets (Ardeinae), crows (Corvus sp.) and brahminy kites (Haliastur indus) hover above. A powerful reminder to prioritize waste management and conservation for the sake of these majestic beings.
A very strong photo representing a strangled dead carrion crow (Corvus corone). The crow got entangled in the net of an abandoned trout fisherman. I captured this photo in a national park in Italy.
Due to habitat loss and the decrease of potential prey, big cats such as the jaguar (Panthera onca) are forced to approach human settlements in search of food. Unfortunately, most of the time they are killed in return for preying on livestock and domestic animals.
The Ciliwung is the main river of the thirteen that flow through Jakarta, the capital of Indonesia. The industrial discharges and the lack of effective wastewater management systems mean that its rivers are among the most polluted on Earth. This has led to the informal extraction of groundwater by its inhabitants, deteriorating the land and causing the city to sink rapidly.
In January 2021, the Sierra de Gádor was the scene of a devastating fire that destroyed more than 400 hectares of its beautiful surroundings, especially the Castala area. Faced with this tragic situation, I decided to undertake a photographic project that would capture the small details of the landscape and convey a glimmer of hope through colour (pinecone from black pine, Pinus nigra).
