The city of falcons
Autor: Luca Eberle

Lesser kestrel is a colonial bird of prey typically found in the dry land habitats of the Mediterranean basin. In recent decades, this species has faced a significant decline in population due to rising temperatures, which have led to premature chick deaths, a reduction in prey availability, and the loss of nesting sites. In Italy, these problems arise in the north, where the species exists in rural areas, as well as in Matera, a historic city in southern Italy that hosts the largest colony in the country. Here, the ongoing building renewal is reducing the availability of nesting cavities for L. kestrels, resulting in a significant loss of the breeding pairs. This poses a real risk that, in the future, Matera may no longer be a stronghold for this species, a status it has maintained for decades. To address these problems, the municipality of the city together with several universities, European conservation projects, and the San Giuliano wildlife recovery, are engaging in study activities on the species and its population dynamics, providing constant rescue service for injured animals, and creating heat-insulating nest boxes that have been placed on the roofs of Matera, as well as entire tower nests in the north of the country.
